This is my current case:

Windows = EveOnline | GuildWars
Linux = UT2k4
NetBSD/Linux = Coding | Everything Else

And this is just while wine or cedega get to the point at which i can play EveOnline on Linux or some BSD variant.

About the Kernel Panics and BSODs, they are exactly the same thing, carried out in different ways with similar results. I'd preffer a Kernel Panic, which tells you exactly what is wrong in a human readable form, than a BSD with the generic/stupid messages M$ tends to put in them.

The problem here is that people don't actually learn to use a computer, at least most of the non-tech related ones. I've met quite a lot of people who ask me how to copy/paste stuff , even when those things are don in the exact same ways in every modern platform out there. They don't even try to do it and see if it Just Works (TM).

People seem to memorize how they do stuff... the result is what happens when you memorize stuff before taking an exam, and the exam turns out to be about comprehension (as they all should be). You have the content, but you don't know what to do with it.

Though you REALLY had some bad luck, I can definitely relate, as I recently had to re-format my mom's PC, and I only had a SP1 disc.

Though my OS is the least open of the alternatives, I agree and support everything you said. There is just so much that you can do in non-Windows OS's that you ask yourself over and over "Why isn't every OS like this?"

People still use windows because people are scared of change -- even if said change will ultimately result in positive outcomes.
Because, what if everything goes wrong when I change? You say it'll work better, but what if you're wrong?

Sure, windows is crap, but at least it's all familiar crap. Blue Screen of Death. Yes, hate it but it's a strangely comforting acquaintance.
Let's try Linux: Kernel panic! Oh my god! What the hell is that? Windows never used to panic. Give me back the calm, tranquil blue hues of a peaceful death.

Fortunately I persevered and got beyond the unfamiliarity. The only reason I still have a windows partition is so that I can actually have something to do at the occasional LAN party.
